What is a water baby puppy?
Fetal anasarca, also commonly referred to as “ water baby ”, or “walrus baby ”, is when a fetus has generalized subcutaneous edema and fluid accumulation throughout the body. Often the pup is twice the normal size causing dystocia and necessitating C-section.

While there can be many causes of dystocia, the occurrence of so-called ” water ” or “walrus” puppies is one of the more common reasons within particular breeds. Water puppies suffer from the abnormal accumulation of body fluids, called anasarca, resulting in a generalized swelling of the body.
